THSG Felting Study Group meets for March

We shared finished pieces from our first challenge--felting a la Martien van Zuilen's surface design workshop. We also shared finished and in-progress pieces of our tribute to fellow artist, Jackie Richards. Last but not least, we shared any other felting we had done since the last meeting and also shared how to make wool ropes/cords! Great time to see and be inspired by old and new felting friends...

STUDENT WORK at SPIRITED HANDS STUDIO WORKSHOP

Our student, fellow felter, and friend, Lois, sent us a photo of her finished Nature Print Wall Blessing from our last workshop.  We had fun in this two day class.  We used some new untried plants as well as some tried and true to each make 4 pieces in 4 different dye pots...so lots of excitement at the opening to see the results.  She finished off this particular piece with a few beads, some copper wire crochet, and golden bamboo.  Great work Lois!  Can't wait to see your finishing touches on the other three pieces...and what happens when you use some Michigan plant life!

Talk About Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone!

This is the culminating piece of Karen Herhold's efforts during our felt study of Martien van Zuilen;s workshop for Surface Design.  Most of us know Karen is not usually into the pink girly-girl fairy mode but this superb Fairy Birdhouse emerged from this collaborative multi-step process!  Just had to share...you go Karen!

Tucson Museum of Art Holiday Show

Some of our fine sales at the show!  We were part of the Tucson Hand Weavers and Spinners Guild "store" for this event.  Had lots of fun working with guild members and customers...it's so nice when your pieces find their home...completes the circle!  :)

Grand Opening Eco Dye Jacket!

After 2 hours and 15 minutes of "cooking" in the pot, one day resting in the pot, and one day resting out of the pot we finally got to open our eco dye jacket bundle!  Needless to say the anticipation was at fever pitch! Hope you enjoy this video of the opening process.  We still will have a day of drying, ironing, rinsing, and more ironing before our piece is ready for a final unveiling...

Adventures in Eco-Dyeing

Hope you enjoy one of my first attempts at a video production!  It chronicles some of our adventures in Eco Dyeing...this time a wet-felted jacket that Sally made awhile ago.  We have used 2 types of Eucalyptus leaves and bark, African Sumac leaves, Blossoming Plum leaves for the botanicals.  The mordants are vinegar, iron water, and maybe some input from the aluminum pot!  Now to wait a couple of days and see what magic happens!

Working in the Round

There is something mysteriously satisfying about working these round shapes from start to finish. An element of dancing while painting with the fibers...getting to interact with the design flow in 360' and up through the layers.

String theory, fractals, wormholes???? I confess. Yes, I've been listening to Morgan Freeman's voice wondering about the universe!

Let's give it a try!

Sally and I are venturing into the blog world in hopes of sharing our fiber adventures with you in an easily accessable format. To us, one of the most enjoyable aspects about being fiber artists is the fun and a-ha's shared amongst fellow devotees. The on-going stream of ingenuity, talent, perseverence, and creativity that we encounter never ceases to amaze...greetings to our fellow travelers on the fiber trail! Updates on what's happening at our studio based in Tucson, Arizona will follow!
