Adventures in Eco-Dyeing

Hope you enjoy one of my first attempts at a video production!  It chronicles some of our adventures in Eco Dyeing...this time a wet-felted jacket that Sally made awhile ago.  We have used 2 types of Eucalyptus leaves and bark, African Sumac leaves, Blossoming Plum leaves for the botanicals.  The mordants are vinegar, iron water, and maybe some input from the aluminum pot!  Now to wait a couple of days and see what magic happens!

vest inspired by Sabino Canyon

This wet felted vest is a seamless construction. Materials include hand dyed prefelt, merino wool, bamboo, BFL wool, silk gauze. Sabino Canyon is absolutely spectacular right now and inspired the desert vignette on the back of this piece.

No Seams! No Sewing!

We continue to explore seamless garment contruction using a resist pattern. Taking advantage of the selvedge edges of the silk at hemlines and necklines makes for a clean finish. It is fun to try and construct the garment at the same time you are doing the feltmaking process rather than making yardage and then sewing the piece in a more conventional manner. I enjoy the many levels of planning involved and the fun of trying new approaches to accomplish the desired effect. Allows my inner scientist to marry with my artist!
