We had the most awesome time in Australia. From Sydney to Perth to Bunbury (for the 11th Southern Hemisphere Felting Convergence) to Cairnes and last but not least Melbourne. Beautiful cities & countryside. Friendly, friendly people. Had such a great time at the felting convergence. The workshops, the fashion show, the food, the comraderie. Hope you can tell by the photos. A once in a lifetime adventure...thank you to all of those kind Australian people who made our trip such a joy.

We are signed up for the 11th southern Hemisphere felt convergence. Three generations in the family of feltmakers are going. whee whee.

I have completed my flag for the conference. What a fun thing to think about travel across the world meet new folks, see new sites, plants, animals and of course the GREAT BARRIER REEF

I plan on doing a least one dive, hopefully with my granddaughter Kate.

Inspiration for the flag is the Koi pond in my yard a peaceful place to hang out.

Manadala Workshop With Martien Van Zuilen

Where do I begin to tell you all of the wonderful things we learned together during this workshop...Martien is such a supportive teacher and leads us to realize our own creative visions--no cookie cutters here! The slide show begins with us laying down our designs first and then taking them to a prefelt stage. Once dry we were able to do detail handwork followed by another day of layout and rolling. Each step in the process was fun in and of itself. Hope you enjoy the finish shots--can't really do them justice without a visit in person.

Where can I begin to tell you how great the two Martien Van Zuilen workshops have been. Both the jewelry and the mandala classes were superb. Will be sharing photos of the beautiful work and smiling faces of the felt-makers over the next few days. Still reflecting on the ahaa's and ooohhh's. Here we are at the Jewelry Adorned workshop with felt artist and teacher Martien Van Zuilen. She is such a wonderful teacher...wait until you see all of the creative pieces that are coming into being. Martien shares her felt-making expertise with clear instructions and demonstrations as well as kind mentoring. Student experience levels vary from novice to over 20+ years of felting--even so Martien hosts a successful class for all. She shares a solid foundation of good felting technique as well as many tips and "ahaa's" much appreciated by experienced felt-makers. One more day to go with this three day session. The next 3 day session--Mandalas--begins this upcoming Wednesday. What a treat it has been to host such a wonderful teacher at Spirited Hands Studio. Inspiration-- dreaming of the Great Barrier Reef down Australia way...HAd fun trying to create the undulations and textures of water, plants in the reef. See any little fish darting by? Construction is wet felted with resists for the cut-aways. Squiggles and twirls attached at the beginning of the felting process.

This hat is wet felted using merino wool and silk crepe. The silk being an outside layer rather than inner creates some lovely texture and sheen.

Hurrah, Hurrah!!! Today is the day. Felt United 2010. The day where many feltmakers from all around the world just plain celebrate the joy of this fiber art.

The Felt Study Group in Tucson, Arizona (sponsored by Tucson Handweavers and Spinners Guild) gathered at Spirited Hands Studio to share this second annual event.

Felting ropes that were joined together into one big long rope ( eventually will be a woven basket), sharing this years project in the Yellow - blue range, and eating tasty food treats all made for a fun and heart felt event!

Cheers and kind regards to all of you feltmakers and sheep our there in the big wide world.

We attended the first annual Creative Felt Gathering at Dainava in Manchester,Michigan.

What a great time.

Teachers Chad Alice Hagan,Elis Vermeulen, and Jone Rakowski wowed us with their felting expertise. Fellow felting students were an awesome group.

Dainava is an absolutley gorgeous Lithuanian camp out in the Michigan woods beside a lovely lake...many inspirations.

Plans are in the making for next year's gathering.

Actually, more than just spring cleaning...the ceiling is fully insulated, heating/cooling unit is installed, and the entire contents reorganized for optimum use. It is very cool. Blessed with an awesome work place. Lots of hard work but the pay off is really big. We are good to go year round.

We continue to explore seamless garment contruction using a resist pattern. Taking advantage of the selvedge edges of the silk at hemlines and necklines makes for a clean finish. It is fun to try and construct the garment at the same time you are doing the feltmaking process rather than making yardage and then sewing the piece in a more conventional manner. I enjoy the many levels of planning involved and the fun of trying new approaches to accomplish the desired effect. Allows my inner scientist to marry with my artist!

This bag is a seamless wet-felted shoulder tote with an inside pocket and an outside pocket for cell phone or keys. Made using Navajo Churro wool, silk gauze, and hand-dyed merino prefelt. Amazing how much this bag will carry but also stay comfrotable on your shoulder due to the wide strap. One of my favorites so far...

I am really enjoying the finishing of the wet-felted wool hat. I have found that doing the layout and initial felting of the piece on the first day, then saving the finishing for another day works great for me. Being patient and fresh improves my chance of responding to the the inclinations of the wool itself. I'm more apt to follow the fibers lead...and execise my sculpting desires accordingly. Once again, thank you sheep!

LOTS! It just amazes me how much fun I have making a hat. Every time I do it I still get that giddy tickle of contentment. I guess that's one of the most alluring aspects of feltmaking for me. Had fun in the studio with Cathy and Lois. Nuno-felt beret style hat and fancy fedora all wool. Finishing work on the fedora this Friday. I used all merino roving in two different colors--"dingo" and " gold". As I continued along in the felting process I noticed a distinct difference in how the two colors were coming along. Eventually realized that although both were from our merino stash, they were from different suppliers. Variables...The particular sheep, the growing conditions, the processing techniques??? The contrast between the two brands of merino was stark! Makes me appreciate my old favorite even more than I used to especially for this particular use. I know I can count on it producing the finish and wearability I'm looking for. Save the other Merino for non-wearing situations.

Getting ready for the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show January 30th on into the middle or so of February 2010. According to the press, this yearly event inTucson is the largest gem and mineral show in the world. Already many signs of gearing up all around town. We will be located at the Douletree Hotel/ Reid Park location for the week of Feb 1-5th. We'll be set up as a vendor hawking our beautiful wares as well as teaching a capelet class at the hotel. Of course we wish we had been the ones to go in-person to Paris but at least our nuno-felt wrap got to go even if we didn't!

This lovely wrap was just the right weight for chill evening air or light breezes.

Equally at home for an afternoon walk along the Senne or for a formal affaire inside the Palace at Versailles this piece worked well for Sara and Joe on their romantic adventure across the sea...ahhhhhh cest bonne.

Today another capelet has entered the World. I posted it on the Etsy site only to find out we are only to do 1 item post a day. We over acheivers must slow down, of course I have no idea why there is a one a day rule. I did have fun doing it anyhow. The latest one is Turq. & celadon with a moss green merino accent.Another wonderful item using the Nuno felting method

Yes, indeed, it is hot here in sunny Tucson at the moment but the creative urge doesn't always comply with the weather conditions. Lucky for us...because Sally continued in pursuit of refining our seamless garment construction and this hot little copper colored jacket is the result.

More seamless construction, silk gauze, merino wool...This piece inspired by Ground Cherries! During our recent visit to the Kansas City Art Institute for the Surface Design Conference, we were presented with a few surprises. One of which were some lovely little delectable fruits that not only tasted great but also were visually intriguing with their lantern shaped leaf-cover hiding a golden orange fruit inside. An unexpected treat for a native desert dweller!

We continue to expand on seamless garment construction. Sally has been focused on a series of dresses (long and short) which then morphed into jacket construction. Will work at getting a post up detailing the step by step process from start to finish with photos. We are so jazzed with the current results! It's so much fun to try out a new idea and see where it leads...you just never know.
